How You Can Help

Each of our societies is a not-for-profit organisation managed on a day to day basis by paid staff, but run by volunteers. The aim is to provide affordable, high quality care.

Central to achieving this is the involvement of the community; collectively, Abbeyfield Societies in Scotland have around 1000 volunteers. If you want to help Abbeyfield achieve its aims you can do so in a number of ways:

Volunteering to help out locally or nationally. This can include everything from sitting on one of the Scottish Societies' volunteer committees to befriending residents. The extent of the commitment that you give is entirely up to you and is agreed when you take up the role of volunteer. All out-of-pocket expenses are repaid and the benefits to you and the residents are immeasurable.

Helping financially by making a donation or through regular giving. Abbeyfield has schemes for one-off donations and give-as-you-earn, which can often be deducted at source. It is also possible to covenant your gift so that we benefit not only from the gift but also from the tax on the gift which we can reclaim. Abbeyfield also provides free step-by-step guides to making a will, and these include details on leaving a gift to Abbeyfield.

Volunteering

Volunteering for Abbeyfield can include:

  • Being a trustee of a society.
  • Being a member of a house committee whose tasks are to manage the house and the house staff.
  • Befriending the residents, talking with them, taking them shopping, to the doctors, to health appointments, organising and participating in social outings and many other tasks they may need help with.
  • Sponsoring a resident. This is a vital role in the life of an Abbeyfield resident. Although it involves no financial commitment, the sponsor is there to look after a resident's interests and help to ensure that their needs are met. A sponsor may be one of a large circle of friends or the mainstay in a resident's life - what is important is your continuing interest and a readiness to give time and advice if and when it's needed.

Helping financially

Abbeyfield is affordable to all, regardless of income. Whilst each house, once set up, is financially self-supporting we are continually striving to meet the costs of major improvements and new initiatives. You can help us in our work in a range of ways including:

  • Making a one-off donation
  • Joining a give-as-you-earn scheme
  • Making arrangements for a regular donation or covenanted giving
  • Remembering Abbeyfield when you make out your will

Public funds are not easy to come by and do not cover the full costs of all of Abbeyfield's services. Donations, legacies and voluntary help enable us to provide, furnish and upgrade houses to a high standard without putting costs beyond the reach of residents.

Your gift of time or money, however small, is a welcome contribution.
