Welcome to Abbeyfield Thornhill
  to the Abbeyfield Thornhill Society

Thornhill, set in the beautiful Nithsdale valley, is a village on the Dumfries to Kilmarnock road, 14 miles north of Dumfries. The village has a good range of shops, with a modern health centre, library, banking facilities, hairdressers, post office and church. Thornhill has an 18 hole golf course and a bowling green.

GALLAMAIR - a house offering companionship and security with independence and dignity for retired older people

Gallamair, our house in Thornhill, is just a short walk from the village centre, quietly situated away from the main road, with lovely views to the Lowther Hills.

A modern, purpose-built house, completed in 1993, it has 10 residents' rooms, all of which have en suite toilet facilities, a telephone point and a tv aerial point. Each room is furnished and decorated by the resident to their own taste.

Residents share the use of a comfortable sitting room, an attractive dining room with a patio overlooking the garden and small putting green, 2 well-equipped kitchenettes, laundry areas, showers and bathrooms.

Lunch and dinner are prepared daily by a live-in housekeeper. Residents are asked to prepare their own breakfasts.

Gallamair is available to everyone, regardless of income. Social benefits may apply to you - the Treasurer is happy to give advice on this aspect.

There is a security door entry system, and a care-call service enables help to be called if required. Should a resident feel the need for extra support, carers are welcome at Gallamair.

Gallamair is administered by a voluntary executive committee, but the day to day internal affairs of the house are managed by the house committee - volunteers who make regular visits to the house to deal with any requests or problems which may arise.

Gallamair has a friendly and homely atmosphere, with regular coffee mornings, entertainment and outings to interesting local places.

The house address is:
