retirement housing

The Abbeyfield Society for Scotland mainly provides two types of retirement housing: very sheltered houses and registered residential care houses. The aim is identical in both cases although the means are slightly different and depend on the needs of our current and prospective residents. We aim to provide

  • Independence
  • Companionship
  • Personal security
  • Friendship and community inclusion

We are also creating new models that will meet the needs of a changing population and the older people of the future. By incorporating the types of retirement housing shown above and introducing additional facilities we are now at the forefront of the set-up of integrated care projects. Abbeyfield offers support for life here - from domiciliary care and day centres through to assisted living apartments, respite care and registered residential care - offering additional support for those coping with increasing frailty or confusion.

The average weekly charge in the Very Sheltered accommodation is usually between £120 and £170, including meals, lighting, heating and the services of a house manager and cook etc. In Registered Residential Care accommodation the charges usually vary between £260 and £340 per week, reflecting the enhanced level of care provided. The reasonable charges are attributable to our not-for-profit status, the high level of volunteer input and volunteers' fundraising activities. Most residents and prospective residents are more interested in the quality of life in an Abbeyfield house than in the facilities and we take the views of our residents very seriously. Abbeyfield is not a business - we are here to enable older people to live as rich and rewarding a life as possible and we only know how to do this by following the lead and the advice of our residents.

The Abbeyfield Society for Scotland provides a range of housing to meet the range of older people's needs but more than this we recognise that loneliness and isolation are factors in the mental health and wellbeing of an older person.
