(Registered as an Industrial Provident Society with Charitable status - 1958 R (S)

The Abbeyfield Falkirk and District Society was formed by a group of people - men from the Rotary Club of Falkirk and ladies from the International Soroptomists Club of Falkirk - under the chairmanship of the late Mr E W Denholm who became their first Chairman. The Society was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965 in April 1978

Dr John Horne, a well-known medical practitioner in Falkirk whose home it was, gifted the house, 'Thornville' to the Society. Over the years it has been added to extensively with accommodation for a resident housekeeper, additional rooms, a conservatory, en-suite facilities for all rooms together with a completely renovated kitchen and a 3-person lift. Office accommodation with a computer has been provided and there is also a large pleasant garden and minimal garage space.

At the present time the Executive Committee has seven members, all volunteers, while the only paid staff consists of a full-time cook/housekeeper, a part-time assistant housekeeper and a part-time cleaner. As a result, charges to residents are low, being approximately £150/week, which includes food, heat and light, but it should be appreciated that no nursing care is provided. There is however a MECS (Mobile Emergency Care Service) system provided which allows help to be summoned from the Local Authority in an emergency.

There is accommodation for nine residents and if proof were needed that residency in an Abbeyfield House prolongs active life then we can report that one resident, Mrs Barr lived with us for over seventeen years and was in her 105th year when she died after a very short spell in hospital!

The committee actively seeks applications for residency.
