YOUR
QUESTIONS ANSWERED
People when considering Abbeyfield or indeed any other
form of housing or care need further information,
and we hope the following questions and answers will
help:
Q
Why choose Abbeyfield?
A
Because Abbeyfield is a Society whose main object
is to provide homes where comfort, security, friendship
and a degree of independence can be found for older
and perhaps lonely people who no longer wish to live
alone.
Q
Where do you sleep, eat, meet people?
A
Each resident has a private bed-sitting room which
they furnish themselves. Two main meals are provided
in the communal dining room daily and a small kitchen
is provided on each floor for residents to prepare
light meals. Each house is centrally heated, double-glazed
and equipped either with a lift or with a stairlift.
A communal sitting room with a television is used
by residents.
Q
Who does the cooking, cleaning, washing, etc.?
A A Housekeeper or Manager supervises the general
running of the house. Some basic washing is laundered
each week free of charge. Additional items can on
request be laundered at a reasonable charge. The cleaning
of bed-sitting rooms is the resident's personal responsibility,
but friends or relatives can assist where desired
and it is usually possible to arrange for domestic
help where necessary.
Q When can family and friends visit?
A
Each house in every sense is the home of its resident
therefore friends and relatives are encouraged to
visit. Residents can entertain visitors in their own
rooms as well as being welcome to use the communal
sitting room.
Q What happens if illness occurs?
A
Each resident retains where possible the services
of his or her own doctor who can be visited or called
in as circumstances require. Where hospital care is
advised this is arranged through normal channels.
Minor ailments and periods of temporary illness can
be dealt with as in a private house, but as no nurse
is employed, the Society cannot be responsible for
providing medical or nursing care during serious or
prolonged illness. However, to support frailer people,
the resident's own doctor will advise the best course
to be taken. Fairfield as a Residential Care facility
provides a longer term commitment to our residents'
care needs.
Q How much does it cost?
A
Individuals from all walks of life can be considered
for residency in an Abbeyfield house. The charges
vary from house to house, as all house running costs
vary and must be covered by the charges paid by the
residents. The weekly charges during the year to 30
April 2007 are as follows:
Where
a potential resident's income is too low to afford
the normal charge, the local office of the Benefits
Agency or Local Authority, which administers Housing
Benefits may, under certain circumstances, make a
contribution towards the cost. Details of available
assistance can be obtained from the members of the
Society who are on hand to give help and advice.
RESIDENTIAL
CARE
Q
What are the main differences between Fairfield and
the other houses?
A:
1.
A non-residential cook is responsible for the catering.
2.
A Manager manages the whole house including the residential
care provision.
3. There are Care Assistants on duty throughout the
day and night for the benefit of the residents.
4. A telephone service is available to enable residential
care residents to make telephone calls in complete
privacy.
5. An in-house care call system is available to enable
residents to contact staff at any time of the day
or night.
6. A care plan is drawn up for each residential care
resident in conjunction with the Manager of the house,
the resident and, if appropriate, the resident's next
of kin.
Q How, Where and to Whom do you apply?
A
Abbeyfield is open to all according to need, irrespective
of age (once retirement age has been reached), sex,
race, religious persuasion or financial circumstances.
