Welcome to the Abbeyfield Ballachulish Society

to the Abbeyfield Ballachulish Society

Our location

Just a fifteen-minute drive from the majestic mountains of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands, is the thriving village of Ballachulish. Within the village, in the heart of the community, is the new Abbeyfield Integrated Care Home. We firmly believe that this is the ideal place for a home for older people who are frail or with dementia, where contacts with family and friends can be maintained and cherished.

Local and long distance buses serve Ballachulish. Church services are arranged in the House, and those who are able can be taken to church. A well-stocked mini supermarket, with Post Office, is only five minutes walk, as is the bank, which opens twice weekly. Cafés, craft shops, a pub and good bed and breakfast establishments are all within a ten-minute walk of the home.

Respite care

Our new, luxuriously appointed Residential Care Home is in the heart of the West Highlands and can offer short-term respite, or long-term care.

Our experienced and caring staff is well trained to provide 24-hour individual care, allowing privacy, independence and dignity. With a friendly, informal atmosphere we provide home cooked, nutritious meals in our restaurant or dining room and we cater for special dietary requirements.

With stunning views to loch and mountains, our spacious respite rooms have en suite facilities and power assisted Jacuzzi-effect baths are available.

The Abbeyfield Integrated Care Scheme

The new scheme, phase one of which opened in 2003, replaced a much loved building, which was unfortunately no longer able to provide the facilities to meet modern standards.

The idea of the new scheme is to provide a wide range of help to as many older people as possible, whether they live in Abbeyfield, or live in the neighbourhood and visit for the day.

The new Registered Care Home has sixteen single rooms, each with ensuite facilities. Ten of these rooms are specifically for older people with dementia, and two will be kept for respite care and short term care. The building has been specially designed to make it easier for people who find it difficult to get around.

There will also be a Day Care Centre and social activities, and a daily lunch club. In addition there is a treatment room and assisted bathroom, shower room and hairdressing room

Twelve Sheltered Housing Apartments have been built adjacent to the Care Home. Our care staff provide as little or as much help as is needed to the tenants there.

We can also help local residents living in their own home, whether they live on their own or have someone looking after them.

All this will work together to promote the continuing care and well being of our residents tenants and visitors.

The care we give

We have an experienced and caring manager and staff who are keen to take up the continuing training opportunities arranged for them. Everyone's needs are different. Our experienced staff knows this and are well trained to provide 24-hour individual care, allowing privacy, independence and dignity.

The Home has a friendly, informal atmosphere. Home cooked meals, served in the restaurant or dining room, cater for individual preferences and dietary needs. As there are no set visiting hours, Residents are pleased to see their families and friends at any time.

The Home owns a minibus enabling Residents to enjoy social events and frequent outings, including travelling to Fort William for musical shows and exhibitions, or more locally, garden party teas. The minibus provides transport for lunch club and Day Care visitors, who may like to join the activities, such as the art class, Movement to Music, fashion shows and coffee mornings.

Among the services and amenities provided are:

  • Modern call system in all bedrooms including telephone
  • Lift to access all floors
  • Second lift within the Sheltered Apartments
  • Safe garden area for Residents
  • Full laundry service
  • Weekly visit of the hairdresser
  • Small, in-house shop
  • Tea/coffee snack facilities for Residents and Visitors

Many older people just need a little more support. Within the Ballachulish area is the Dispensing Medical Practice, with a Practice Nurse. Community Nurses have an office in the building and regularly visit residents. A Dental Practice is in nearby Glencoe. A chiropodist visits by arrangement. All these services support the Abbeyfield Residents.

Trustees

A team of dedicated Trustees, all volunteers, has overall management responsibility for the home. They work hard to maintain the financial security and caring philosophy of the Ballachulish Care Home.

The Abbeyfield Ballachulish Society offers reasonable charges and a rental policy for the Sheltered Apartments, which is in line with Local Authority affordability guidelines. We welcome enquiries on any aspect of our services.
